Psoriasis is not like a cold or the flu. You can't get it by hugging, touching, or sitting next to someone who has it. It's totally safe to be around!
Do you know someone with red or scaly patches on their skin? They might have something called psoriasis (say it: sore-EYE-uh-sis). Here are 5 things they probably wish everyone knew about it!
Psoriasis is not like a cold or the flu. You can't get it by hugging, touching, or sitting next to someone who has it. It's totally safe to be around!
Some kids think psoriasis happens because someone doesn't wash their body properly, or ate something bad. That's not true at all! Psoriasis happens because a person's skin cells grow much faster than normal. It's just how their body works, and it's nobody's fault.
Imagine having an itch you can't always scratch away. That's what psoriasis can feel like sometimes. Your friend might need to take breaks, use special lotion, or just have a rough day — and that's okay.
If you notice a friend's skin looks different, try not to stare or point it out in front of others. If you're curious, it's okay to ask them privately and kindly, like "Hey, is it okay if I ask about your skin?" — and always be ready to just drop it if they don't want to talk about it.
More than anything, your friend with psoriasis wants to be seen as normal as everyone else! Play with them, laugh with them, and treat them exactly like you'd treat anyone else.
